The Town of Longboat Key became a municipal government on November 14, 1955. On that date, 199 of the island’s 250 registered voters gathered in a tiny fire station and voted 186-13 in favor of incorporation. Longboat Key grew exponentially in its first 60 years. Development started gradually but hit its peak in the 1960s and 1970s. Today, it has more than 6,200 registered voters, a population of 6,900 permanent residents, which reaches 23,000 during peak season.The island is divided
between Sarasota and Manatee Counties at 4134 Gulf of Mexico Drive but is governed by a seven member Longboat Key Town Commission. The Town Charter calls for a Town Manager/Council form of government.The Town has approximately 120 employees and provides a full complement of services: Police, Fire-Rescue, Public Works (streets,
parks, water/wastewater), Planning, Zoning & Building (permitting & inspections), Town Clerk, Finance, and Information Technology.Longboat Key is consistently ranked as one of the 10 safest communities in Florida. The Police Marine Units patrol the waterways surrounding the island, Jewfish Key, and the passes on the North and South end.The Town’s Fire-Rescue Department is staffed by 33 emergency responders who are all sworn paramedics or EMTs. The Fire-Rescue personnel
also provides valuable community services which include blood pressure screenings, fire/safety inspections, CPR/AED training, and implements a CARE program for our residents. The Town is also responsible for maintaining one of the most valued assets to our residents and visitors: 12 miles of pristine, white sand beach which helps make this a world-class tourist destination. Public Works staff also maintains 12 public beach points of access and 10 accesses to Sarasota Bay. The Town-operates several, various recreational facilities.	The Longboat Key Public Tennis Center
has 10 soft clay courts, teaching professionals, an observation deck and regular tournament and league events.
